1. How important is it to develop future leaders?
It is vital to develop future leaders. One of the principal ways in which one should judge a leader is his/her approach to succession planning. Thus political leaders who are generally held in high esteem like Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher failed this test. In business Jack Welch and Lord Maclaurin have been outstanding individual examples of how to do it while corporations like Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Mars have long had a commitment to grow their future leaders. I was fortunate enough to work for two of those!
2. Why are you a part of Criticaleye?
I enjoy access to, and participating in, a network of leaders. I like to think I can bring my very varied experience to bear on enriching the network and helping others to reach their potential while I can assure you that I still enjoy learning and I like to attend events where I am not in my comfort zone and learn from others’ expertise.
3. Why is being a sounding board important?
‘No man is an island’ and leadership can be lonely. It is not always appropriate to confide with your colleagues, your subordinates or your boss. It is helpful to have the opportunity to discuss issues both of a personal and a business nature with someone who is engaged but not directly involved in your enterprise. I find that while I may not have had the specific experience that the member is going through I will have been through something similar or I know someone who has.
